Is Ayurveda scientific and does it work?

When someone asks whether Ayurveda is scientific, what they usually want to know is: does Ayurveda work? How does it work? And why does it work? They reach for the word science because, collectively, science is what we have agreed will answer those questions.

However, the scientific method as it is applied in the current healthcare model is more or less determined by what we can directly observe. But what if, at the forefront of science, we are arriving at a conclusion that the patterns which organise our biology and chemistry are subtler than anything we can directly observe?

So the purpose of this article is to work out whether the best science we currently have is converging with the oldest healing tradition on earth. And if it is, whether a newer model of healthcare, one that can genuinely target the root cause of illness, could be paradigm shifting.

To answer whether a system of healthcare is truly scientific, we first have to ask a deeper question: what are we actually healing?

The Limits of Biology and Chemistry in Modern Medicine

The entire model of conventional healthcare is built upon the premise that we are physical beings. We are made of organs, anatomy, and biochemistry. Biology is essential for understanding the function of our muscles and cells. Chemistry is essential for understanding the bonds and reactions that keep us alive. When we prescribe medication, we do so to alter chemical reactions. When we perform surgery, we do so to repair physical anatomy. This model works exceptionally well if the human body, at its core, is nothing more than biology and chemistry.

I am not disputing the accuracy of biology and chemistry, nor am I dismissing the life-saving benefits of conventional medicine, particularly when it comes to diagnostics, safety, and acute care. But we have to look honestly at the modern chronic disease burden. We have to look at the sheer number of patients who are medicated for years, stuck in cycles of unexplained fatigue, pain, and brain fog, merely suppressing symptoms without ever resolving the root cause. Is our current model of healthcare the best we can do?

To find a better way forward, we may have to look at if there is anything that underlies all of biology and chemistry, and therefore if there is a deeper layer we are missing.

Quantum Field Theory and the True Nature of Matter

Underlying every biological process and every chemical reaction is physics.

Quantum field theory then combines quantum mechanics with special relativity, the theory that gave us Einstein’s famous E=mc². It reveals something astonishing: at the most fundamental level of reality, particles are not solid billiard balls bouncing off one another. They are excitations of underlying fields.1, 2

If this is our most accurate scientific understanding of reality, we must ask a critical question: how much of conventional medicine is actually based on this deepest truth? And can we heal the body if our medical model stops at chemistry, ignoring the fundamental physics driving it?

This is where Ayurveda enters the equation. This article challenges the most fundamental belief systems of conventional medicine, that:

  • what we see with our eyes is the only reality
  • we are separate
  • consciousness is merely a byproduct of the brain
  • and that a map built without instruments, like Ayurveda’s elements and doshas, can have nothing to say about the fields described in quantum field theory

If Ayurveda’s ancient map correlates directly with our best understanding of reality, then it could be argued that it is converging with our most scientific model. Maybe conventional medicine is missing something that could be paradigm shifting.

If we can truly understand who we are at this deepest level, and if health can be diagnosed and treated at this deepest level, the implications reach beyond individual chronic disease to the health of our society as a whole.

This article explores what quantum physics reveals about healing, and why the oldest healing tradition on earth may be more scientific than we could have ever imagined.

The Double-Slit Experiment: Why Observation Shapes What We See

To understand the true nature of reality, consider the most famous experiment in quantum mechanics: the double-slit experiment.3

Imagine a wall containing two narrow gaps. Now imagine firing tiny solid objects towards it, like bullets. Behind the wall is a second screen showing where every bullet lands. You would expect to see two main bands, one behind each gap.

But when electrons or photons are sent through a double-slit apparatus one at a time, something stranger happens. If you place a detector to see which slit the particle goes through, they act like solid particles. But remove this detector, and particles go through the slits like a wave.

The takeaway is this: what we perceive as solid, definite reality may not be the deepest level of reality available to us.

Why does this matter for your health? Conventional medicine, like all empirical science, is fundamentally based on observation, on what we can see, measure, and test with our instruments. But the double-slit experiment suggests that an unseen, field-like layer of potential exists beneath our physical observations, and that the act of observation itself alters this.

A common criticism of modern healthcare is that it treats symptoms rather than root causes. I would take this further: how can conventional medicine fix the root cause of an illness if its entire diagnostic model is based on what it can measure directly? It risks missing the invisible, organising fields beneath it. To heal at the deepest level, we need a framework that understands the unobservable. This is exactly where Ayurveda enters the equation.

Quantum Entanglement: A Universe More Connected Than It Appears?

The second experiment essential to this discussion is quantum entanglement, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2022 for experiments with entangled photons.4, 5 The short video on the right is entanglement in brief: individual, societal, and global implications.

In these experiments, when two particles are entangled, measuring the state of one instantaneously reveals the state of the other, regardless of distance. To a classical physicist who believes particles are separate, this is “spooky.” But if the universe is a dynamic web of interconnected energy fields, and particles are excitations of an overarching field that are part of an interdependent whole, it makes perfect sense.

Which brings us to a potentially striking parallel: for 5,000 years, Ayurveda has stated that interconnectedness is a fundamental universal law, binding the individual (the microcosm) and the universe (the macrocosm) through the same organising principles.

If the deepest physics of the universe shows that connection can persist regardless of distance, does it really make sense to treat the human body as a collection of isolated parts?

Consider how hyper-specialised modern healthcare has become. If you have a neurological issue, you see a neurologist; a gut issue, a gastroenterologist; a skin issue, a dermatologist. While this allows for a deep understanding of individual organs, it fundamentally fragments the patient.

In Ayurveda, we don’t just look at the physical symptom in isolation. We look at the whole person. We look at the underlying subtle energy flowing throughout the body, the fundamental forces of nature, the seasons, the environment, and the deep connection between mind, body, and spirit. We understand that to truly resolve a physical issue, you must treat the interconnected field that governs it.

The forefront of medicine is beginning to turn in this direction. People are realising that whole-person healing is not just a philosophy; it is the reality of how biology works. Understanding the interconnectedness of the human body is the direction medicine is moving in, one that holds real potential for both individual and global health.

Hagelin’s Parallel Between the Five Elements of Ayurveda and Quantum Field Theory

In 1987, quantum physicist Dr. John Hagelin proposed a specific correlation between the Ayurvedic elements and quantum field theory in his paper, ‘Is Consciousness the Unified Field? A Field Theorist’s Perspective’.6

At the core of Ayurveda, our health and the universe are profoundly linked through five great cosmic elements, or Panchamahabhutas: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. Serving as the building blocks of both the cosmos and ourselves, connecting Ayurveda to a greater spiritual view of existence. But rather than static materials, they act as governing principles of energy, different frequencies of the same underlying field of nature, known as Prakriti:

  • Earth (Prithivi): Structure, stability, and form.
  • Water (Jala): Cohesion, lubrication, flow and the conditions that allow life to organise itself.
  • Fire (Tejas): Heat, metabolism, light, and transformation.
  • Air (Vayu): Movement, communication, breath and nervous system activity.
  • Ether (Akasha): Space, subtlety, openness and the field in which movement occurs.

Hagelin drew parallels between these five elements and spin classifications in quantum field theory:

  • Spin 0 (Higgs Field / Higgs Boson) → Earth (Prithivi): In physics, the Higgs field gives particles mass.7
  • Spin 1/2 (Matter Field / Quarks & Leptons) → Water (Jala): Making up roughly 60% of an adult’s body weight and regarded as the elixir of life (jeeva), Water corresponds to the matter fields (quarks and leptons).8, 9 At a fundamental level, biological system dynamics rely on the transmission of energy and charge, which requires protons (which are made of quarks) and electrons (which are leptons). Together, these spin-1/2 matter fields make up all ordinary substance.
  • Spin 1 (Force Fields / Photons & Gluons) → Fire (Tejas): In physics, photons carry the electromagnetic force,10 and it is that force which binds atoms into molecules and underlies the whole of chemistry.11 When an atom absorbs or emits a photon, an electron moves between energy levels, and that single event sits behind photosynthesis, human vision, and a great deal of the chemistry that keeps us alive.12, 13
  • Spin 3/2 (Dark Matter candidates / Gravitino) → Air (Vayu): This may be analogous to dark matter, which has gravitational effects on a cosmic scale but cannot be detected by normal methods as it does not interact with electromagnetic forces. The gravitino, a theoretical spin 3/2 particle appearing in some supersymmetric models, has been discussed as one possible dark matter candidate, but it remains hypothetical and has never been observed.14
  • Spin 2 (Gravity / Graviton) → Ether (Akasha): Ether, with its relationship to the enormous underlying fabric of space, is analogous to gravity, which changes spacetime despite its weak interactions, making the hypothetical graviton (spin 2) difficult to detect.15, 16

Understanding how gravity and dark matter operate on cosmic scales while remaining elusive at the subatomic level is one of contemporary science’s greatest riddles. Dark matter’s presence is inferred from its gravitational effects on stars and galaxies, and its true nature may only be revealed through further observation and research. And according to Einstein’s general relativity, gravity is not a force propagating across space, but a property of spacetime itself.15 This may mirror Ayurveda’s understanding of Ether (Akasha) as the underlying fabric of space, and Air (Vayu) representing the unseen dynamism and gravitational influence moving through it.

I find it striking how the sages of these ancient healing traditions, without particle accelerators and using a completely different language, may have mapped very similar underlying principles (structure, cohesion, transformation, movement, and space) that modern science is now beginning to describe in its own terms.

Why does this parallel matter so much?

Because if two radically different methods of investigating nature, ancient introspection and modern quantum physics, arrive at comparable organising patterns, then this may be what is needed for Ayurveda to be more established in the West as a genuine path towards healing at the deepest level.

Doshas and Superfields: The Physics of Healing

Hagelin’s analogy extends further, into supersymmetric theory, where different quantum fields combine into larger structures known as superfields. He compared this to the Ayurvedic concept of the three doshas: Kapha, Pitta, and Vata.6

Just as the Higgs field interacts with matter fields to provide mass, the combination of Earth and Water creates Kapha dosha, connected with structure. The Gauge Superfield, akin to photon interactions, combines Water and Fire to represent Pitta dosha, associated with transformation. Finally, the Gravity Superfield, representing gravity and dark matter, corresponds to Vata dosha, related to motion.

Kapha gives structure. Pitta transforms. Vata moves. Everything a body does falls somewhere in those three, and Ayurveda’s diagnostic power comes from asking which one has drifted out of proportion rather than which organ has failed.

Clinically, this is where Ayurveda becomes practical. It gives us a way to recognise patterns that do not always fit neatly into a single modern diagnosis. We see these constitutional imbalances in the clinic every day:

  • Too much movement, not enough stability (Vata imbalance): Anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, bloating, dryness, variable digestion, racing thoughts, and nervous system sensitivity. Modern language calls this burnout or nervous-system dysregulation.
  • Too much heat and transformation (Pitta imbalance): Acidity, inflammation, irritability, burning sensations, skin flares, intensity, and a sharp appetite.
  • Too much heaviness and stagnation (Kapha imbalance): Sluggishness, congestion, low motivation, fatigue that does not lift with rest, fluid retention, and a slow metabolism.

When we view the patient through this lens, we aren’t just treating a symptom; we are balancing the fundamental forces of nature operating within their body.

Consciousness, the Unified Field and Purusha

Leading physicists from the founding era of quantum theory, such as Max Planck and Erwin Schrödinger, seem to have described consciousness (or the field) as a fundamental deeper layer of physical reality, rather than as something produced by matter. This direction of thought is striking when placed alongside Ayurveda’s concept of Purusha: the pure consciousness from which the manifest world unfolds.17, 18 In this view, visible biology is not the beginning of the story, but rather the expression of deeper layers of intelligence, and what we perceive as solid matter is simply a slowed-down, condensed vibration of that original field.

John Hagelin went further, arguing that the unified field of physics and the unified field of consciousness are not just parallel, they may be identical. Hagelin argued that the objective experience of natural law through modern science and the subjective experience through Vedic science are complementary approaches to the same fundamental reality.

Today, as theoretical physics hits the financial and technological limits of building larger particle accelerators, one of the most important scientific frontiers is consciousness. Explaining it could lead to a revolution in scientific knowledge.

If consciousness is truly a fundamental field, then the effects of coherence in this field are something we should be able to logically measure to potentially start proving or disproving the existence of such a field.

The Maharishi Effect: What Happens When People Meditate Together

This has potentially already been done by the research of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Maharishi utilized Transcendental Meditation (TM) to open awareness to the unified field, coordinating a greater connection between the mind and body. The benefits of Transcendental Meditation, greater integration of brain function (measured as increased EEG coherence), improved physiological regulation, and reduced stress, anxiety, and blood pressure, have been the subject of hundreds of studies across universities worldwide.19–24

But what is particularly striking is what happens when this is practised in groups.

Not only does group practice enhance the benefit to the individual; it appears to benefit society as a whole. Maharishi predicted that approximately the square root of one percent of a population practising together could influence the whole population. This phenomenon, documented in hundreds of scientific studies, is known as the Maharishi Effect.25–30

Reported findings include reductions in societal crime, conflict, social stress, and political tension when a critical number of people practice together. Studies propose that high brainwave coherence in groups creates coherence in collective consciousness, leading to decreased crime, accidents, and international conflict, alongside increased positive social and economic trends.

From everything I could find, whilst some of this research has been challenged,31 like all scientific research should be, I do feel that much of this extensive literature has been largely ignored by mainstream science.

The most important question could then be: how can we explain this? If we are just isolated biological machines and consciousness does not exist, I cannot think of a rational explanation. However, taking all of the points in this article into account, in my opinion the most straightforward explanation is that we are deeply entangled. Consciousness is foundational, more fundamental than our classical space-time framework. The consciousness that underlies the universe is the same consciousness that underlies the individual. Coherence at the level of the field can influence the larger system.32

This means that ancient Vedic and modern scientific approaches could be described as complementary parts to understanding the same fundamental layer of natural law.

What This Means for the Future of Integrative Medicine

Reality is deeper than it first appears. Observation is part of the equation, and my own position, having read what these physicists actually wrote, is that consciousness is fundamental rather than a byproduct of the brain.

If the body is not separate from the field of life around it, then an honest medicine must be deep enough to meet reality at that level. Healing must involve more than chemistry alone. It must address the subtle levels beneath our cells: the nervous system, the biofield35, emotions, lifestyle, and consciousness.

Modern medicine is excellent at acute care, emergencies, surgery, infection control, and trauma. We need this safety and precision. But for the chronic, multi-system conditions that dominate healthcare today, it often falls short. The patient with fatigue, poor sleep, anxiety, gut symptoms, and brain fog, whose blood tests are normal, suffers in the space between specialties. They are treated as fragmented machines rather than dynamic, interconnected fields.

As we get a better grasp of both traditional wisdom and modern science, it becomes evident that integrating these perspectives is essential for the future of medicine.

The future of healthcare must combine the safety and acute care of conventional medicine with the personalisation, whole-person depth, and preventive wisdom of Ayurveda. Quantum physics may be offering a language for describing why these older frameworks were pointing where they were.

What This Means for You

For the patient, this can be profoundly empowering. It suggests that healing is not just something that happens to you from the outside. Modern epigenetics reveals that our environment and lifestyle can modify gene expression in ways nobody suspected a generation ago.36 What happens around you and to you gets into the biology, which means changing your conditions, your rhythms, your sleep, your food, and your nervous system is a form of treatment rather than a substitute for one.

Recognising genuine interconnectedness also lifts the isolating veil of chronic illness. If mind, body, and environment participate in one interconnected reality, health cannot be reduced only to what is visible under a microscope. When we understand that nothing is genuinely isolated, it changes how we treat ourselves, each other, and the living systems on which we depend. I am certain that the next generation of clinicians will need to understand this intricate relationship between the physical and the spiritual, the scientific and the intuitive. Personally, I believe patients should seek practitioners who comprehend this wider framework of reality.

Ayurveda has always worked from this wider premise. It acknowledges that genuine health and happiness stem from the alignment of body, mind, and spirit with the cosmic order. It defines health not merely as the absence of disease, but as the complete balance of mind, body, spirit, and consciousness, all entangled.

By adopting this holistic perspective, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of health and sickness, one that tackles the root causes of human suffering. In my clinical work, this is exactly what I aim to do: to understand the person deeply, respect the body’s innate wisdom, and use the best tools from every tradition to guide them back to balance. Not just to suppress symptoms, but to create higher levels of function, creativity, and higher states of joy and fulfilment. A state of health many people don’t even believe is possible for them to achieve.

Is Ayurveda scientific?

There is a lack of rigorous, large-scale, double-blind, standardised randomised controlled trials to determine Ayurvedic treatments as being fully validated science, and I would not claim otherwise.

Correlations are sometimes made, however, between modern quantum field theory, the double-slit experiment, quantum entanglement and the unified field of physics on one side, and the Ayurvedic description of a reality beyond what can be perceived on the other: interconnectedness, a unified field of consciousness, the five elements, and the doshas that underpin Ayurvedic diagnosis and treatment. These suggest a correlation between the governing principles behind quantum science and Ayurveda.

Whilst this is not accepted in the mainstream scientific community, and whilst I would not present it as evidence that any particular treatment works, in my personal opinion these parallels are worth considering when we discuss what the integrative healthcare model could look like going forward.

Does Ayurveda work?

For certain things there is reasonable evidence, and for others we simply do not know yet. Where Ayurveda overlaps with what conventional medicine already accepts, in diet, sleep, stress, daily routine and digestion, the ground is reasonably solid. Where specific multi-herbal formulations are claimed to treat specific diseases, much of it remains untested rather than tested and found wanting.

What I find most useful in clinic is not any individual herb but the pattern recognition. A patient arrives with fatigue, poor sleep, gut symptoms and anxiety, every test normal, and four specialists who have each correctly found nothing wrong within their own area. Ayurveda gives me a framework to read that as one picture rather than four separate problems, and that is one of the biggest reasons I take it seriously.

None of which means it replaces acute care. If someone presents with chest pain, they need a hospital.

Is Ayurveda backed by science?

Whilst there may be some backing for the active compounds of specific plant ingredients, such as turmeric and ashwagandha, and their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, the complete multi-herbal treatments that a practitioner actually prescribes are largely lacking large, good-quality human randomised controlled trials.

The reason for that, however, is one I rarely see discussed. To spend tens of millions of dollars investigating the very large number of multi-herbal treatments where a patent cannot be gained, and where that money therefore cannot be returned, is simply not feasible. A standardised extract or a manufacturing process can be patented, so the incentive is not entirely absent, but it does not begin to compare with what a new patentable molecule offers.

Therefore, in my personal opinion, the speed at which science progresses to back Ayurvedic treatments that are completely natural and cannot be patented will always be slower than for treatments that can be. The same applies to generic drugs, to most surgical techniques, to physiotherapy and to almost all dietary intervention. What cannot be owned does not get tested at the same rate, whatever its merit.

None of that proves Ayurvedic treatments work. It does mean that unproven and disproven are two different things, and that a great deal of Ayurveda sits in the first category for reasons that are commercial rather than scientific.

Is Ayurveda a pseudoscience?

Whilst Ayurveda is typically considered a pseudoscience by the mainstream scientific community, I would argue that pre-scientific is the more accurate description.

A pseudoscience, properly defined, is a claim dressed in scientific language precisely so that it cannot be tested. Ayurvedic claims are not constructed that way. A statement such as “this formulation reduces joint pain in rheumatoid arthritis” is an ordinary empirical claim, and any research group could test it tomorrow. In most cases nobody has, for the funding reasons above.

Ayurveda was assembled from centuries of careful clinical observation, long before anyone had the tools to test a mechanism. That produces a body of knowledge in which genuine signal and genuine error sit together, and the honest work is separating the two. Where something has been properly tested and has failed, I think it should be dropped without sentiment, and I would say the same about a fair amount of what I was taught at medical school.

What is the science of Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a five-thousand-year-old traditional healing system from India, and the word itself translates as the science of life.

Its core principles rest on the five elements, which are space, air, fire, water and earth, and on the three doshas formed from them, which are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These describe individual body types and energies. When the doshas are in balance there is harmony, and illness occurs when they fall out of balance. Treatment then works through diet, lifestyle, herbal medicines, cleansing protocols and daily routine.

What I find useful about it clinically is that it is a systems model rather than an organ model, which is why it tends to catch the presentations that fall between specialties.

Is Ayurveda safe?

There are genuine concerns regarding heavy metals, a lack of regulation of products sold online, and drug interactions. Lead, mercury and arsenic have been found in a proportion of Ayurvedic products sold to the public, particularly the traditional rasa shastra preparations.33, 34 Herbs are also pharmacologically active, and some of them will change how a prescribed medication is metabolised.

Whilst lifestyle practices such as yoga, meditation, diet and daily routine are generally safe, I think it is best to speak with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, and to tell your own doctor what you are taking, so that you can make an informed decision before following any Ayurvedic programme.
